On-Premise vs. Cloud:
OpEx vs. CapEx Explained
7 min read · By Vantyk Team
"Just move everything to the cloud" is advice thrown around a lot — but for many businesses, it's not the whole picture. The right answer depends on your workload, your team size, your compliance requirements, and most importantly, your financial model. Let's break it down simply.
CapEx vs. OpEx — What's the Difference?
CapEx (Capital Expenditure) means you buy the asset upfront — servers, switches, storage hardware. It's a large one-time cost that depreciates over time and sits on your balance sheet as an asset. On-premise infrastructure is typically CapEx.
OpEx (Operational Expenditure) means you pay as you go — monthly subscriptions, cloud compute, SaaS licensing. It's predictable, flexible, and counts as an operating cost rather than a capital investment. Cloud is typically OpEx.
🏢 On-Premise
- Full control over your data and hardware
- Lower long-term cost for stable workloads
- Better for compliance-heavy industries
- High upfront hardware investment
- Requires internal or managed IT support
☁️ Cloud
- No hardware to buy or maintain
- Scale up or down instantly
- Enables remote work and global access
- Monthly costs grow with usage
- Vendor lock-in and data sovereignty concerns
The Hybrid Sweet Spot
For most businesses, the answer isn't all-cloud or all-on-premise — it's a hybrid. Keep sensitive data and core workloads on-site where you control them, and use the cloud for scalability, backups, collaboration tools, and disaster recovery. This gives you the financial flexibility of OpEx where it makes sense, and the control of CapEx where it matters most.
